How to replace a motorcycle chain? Complete guide

Featuring video, tools and tips from WheelsWork.

Step by step: replacing the chain and sprockets

This instruction applies to 95 percent of the engines.

Step 1: Remove the old chain

  1. Engine on paddock stand

  2. Find the lock (clip or latch)

  3. Clip closure→ remove
Rivet link → cut with an angle grinder or chain punch

Safety tip: wear gloves and goggles

Step 2: Remove front and rear sprocket

Rear sprocket:

  • Wheel loose

  • Nuts loose

  • Gear off

Front sprocket:

  • Remove crankcase cover

  • Loosen the retaining plate or nut

  • Pull the gear forward

Step 3: Install the new gears

NB:

✅ Rear sprocket = tighten crosswise
✅ Front sprocket = replace the locking plate or lock the nut with Loctite

Step 4: Install new chain

  1. Putting a new chain on the sprockets

  2. Closes with a latch or clip lock (depending on type)

  3. Check that the links move smoothly

PRO TIP: Use a riveting/punching tool for the neatest installation.

Step 5: Tension the chain

Use the markings on the swingarm.

✅ The chain should not be too tight
✅ Keep a space of about 2–3 cm up and down movement
✅ Both sides exactly the same → otherwise your wheel will run crooked

Step 6: Lubricate with chain spray

Do not use WD40 (dries out rubber).
Use professional chain spray.

👉 Recommended: Muc-Off Chain Lube

  • Less friction

  • Longer life of chain and sprockets

Extra maintenance tip

Clean and lubricate every 500 to 700 km
In rain or off-road: more often

Usage:

  • Muc-Off Chain Cleaner to loosen dirt

  • Muc-Off Chain Lube to lubricate the chain
