How to replace a motorcycle chain? Complete guide

Step by step: replacing the chain and sprockets
This instruction applies to 95 percent of the engines.
Step 1: Remove the old chain

Engine on paddock stand

Find the lock (clip or latch)
-
Clip closure→ remove
Rivet link → cut with an angle grinder or chain punch
Safety tip: wear gloves and goggles
Step 2: Remove front and rear sprocket
Rear sprocket:
-
Wheel loose
-
Nuts loose
-
Gear off
Front sprocket:
-
Remove crankcase cover
-
Loosen the retaining plate or nut
-
Pull the gear forward
Step 3: Install the new gears
NB:
✅ Rear sprocket = tighten crosswise
✅ Front sprocket = replace the locking plate or lock the nut with Loctite
Step 4: Install new chain

Putting a new chain on the sprockets

Closes with a latch or clip lock (depending on type)

Check that the links move smoothly
PRO TIP: Use a riveting/punching tool for the neatest installation.
Step 5: Tension the chain
Use the markings on the swingarm.
✅ The chain should not be too tight
✅ Keep a space of about 2–3 cm up and down movement
✅ Both sides exactly the same → otherwise your wheel will run crooked
Step 6: Lubricate with chain spray
Do not use WD40 (dries out rubber).
Use professional chain spray.
