The chain is the part that wears out fastest and is most neglected. A dry, dirty chain not only wears itself out but also takes your front and rear sprockets with it, turning a small maintenance job into an expensive replacement round. Good maintenance takes five minutes every few hundred kilometers.

Choose the Right Lubrication

This is where most people make the wrong choice, as there is no universal chain spray. Wet Lube is thick and adheres strongly. Intended for wet, cold conditions and winter rides. However, it attracts more dust and dirt. Dry Lube is thin and dries. For dry and dusty weather, as less dirt sticks to it. Needs more frequent reapplication. All-Weather Lube is the compromise for those who ride all year and don't want two cans. Off-Road All-Weather is the heavy-duty version for mud and rough terrain.

First Clean, Then Lubricate

Lubricating over old grease and sand only makes the chain more abrasive. Use the Drivetrain Cleaner with a chain brush, let the chain dry, and then lubricate. The Muc-Off Chain Care Kit has cleaner, brush, and lubricant in one package. Preferably lubricate a hand-warm chain, immediately after a ride. The grease will then penetrate better between the rollers, and there will be time for it to harden before you ride again.

For opening and riveting, you'll find the Beta 3080 C15 set, the Beta 3081 punch for sizes 415 to 532, the Kellermann KTW 2.5 in eight parts, the DID KM500, and the Oxford OX177 here. Replacement punches are available separately, as they are wear parts. Always replace your chain along with both sprockets. A new chain on worn sprockets will stretch again within a few thousand kilometers. Everything in this collection comes from official European distributors.

Maintenance, cleaning and chain care

The chain wears faster than anything else you can maintain yourself. Lubricate it warm after a ride rather than before, so the lube creeps between the rollers. On O and X ring chains use only products that will not attack the seals. When washing, keep pressure washers off bearings, the chain and electrical connectors. A pH neutral cleaner leaves paint, matte finishes and anodised parts alone.
