The 10 Best Motorcycle Routes in the Black Forest (2027)

19 October 2026/5 min read

Short answer: the best motorcycle routes in the Black Forest are the Schwarzwaldhochstraße (B500) between Baden-Baden and Freudenstadt, the roads around the Feldberg and the Titisee, the Kinzig Valley, the area around Triberg and the twisty valleys around Waldkirch. Note: on some roads, such as part of the Schauinslandstraße near Freiburg, motorcycles are banned at weekends.

The Black Forest in the southwest of Germany is one of the most popular motorcycle destinations in Europe. Dense pine forests, deep valleys, high peaks and roads with endless bends. From the Netherlands it is a long ride, which is why many riders turn it into a multi-day trip. In this guide you will find the ten best routes and everything you need to know before you go.

1. The Schwarzwaldhochstraße (B500)

The best-known road in the Black Forest runs along the ridges from Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt. You ride through forests and over open stretches with views across the Rhine Valley. On the way you pass the Mummelsee, a mountain lake that makes a nice place to stop. On nice days it is very busy here. In 2026 there was talk of extra measures for the 2027 riding season, such as more checks, so look up the current rules beforehand.

2. The Murg Valley

From the northern side of the Black Forest, the road winds through the Murg Valley, along the river and small villages. A great route to combine with the Schwarzwaldhochstraße.

3. The Kinzig Valley

The Kinzig Valley is a wide valley with half-timbered villages such as Gengenbach and Haslach. The roads along the valley are relaxed, but as soon as you turn into a side valley it gets twisty and steep. Ideal as a base for several day trips.

4. Triberg and the Gutach Valley

Near Triberg you will find the famous waterfalls, a popular stop. The roads around Triberg and through the Gutach Valley are twisty and varied, with views over the wooded hills here and there.

5. The Simonswald Valley and the Kandel

Northeast of Freiburg lie the Elz Valley and the Simonswald Valley. From Waldkirch you climb to the Kandel, one of the well-known peaks of the Black Forest. A stretch for those who love hairpins. Watch for signs with speed limits or bans.

6. The Schauinsland near Freiburg

The Schauinslandstraße is a classic mountain road with plenty of bends, just outside Freiburg. On part of this road, motorcycles are banned at weekends. So ride it during the week, or choose a different route at the weekend.

7. The Feldberg and the Titisee

The Feldberg is the highest peak of the Black Forest. The roads around it offer sweeping views, and in the valley lies the Titisee, a popular spot for a break. Allow for the cold: at this altitude it is often a lot fresher than in the valley.

8. The Belchen

The Belchen lies in the southwest and is considered one of the finest viewpoints in the Black Forest. The roads leading there are narrow and twisty. The last stretch to the summit is done on foot or by cable car.

9. The Wutach Valley and the southern Black Forest

In the south lies the Wutach Gorge, a deep ravine. The roads in this quiet corner are less busy than in the north and run through open landscapes and small villages.

10. The Hotzenwald and the Rhine Valley

Right in the south, against the Swiss border, lies the Hotzenwald. From the plateau you ride in flowing bends down to the Rhine Valley. A lovely finale if you are travelling on via Switzerland or Alsace.

What to know before you go

  • Motorcycle bans: on a number of roads in the Black Forest, motorcycles are banned at weekends or on public holidays. Watch the signs and check your route beforehand.
  • Checks: on popular motorcycle routes there are frequent checks on speed and noise. Stick to the rules.
  • Weather: on the peaks it is often colder and the weather can turn quickly. Always bring an extra layer and rain gear.
  • Crowds: in high season and at weekends the well-known routes are busy. During the week you ride in much more peace.

The right gear for the Black Forest

A jacket for warm valleys and cool peaks

In a single day you ride from a warm valley to a fresh summit. A ventilated jacket with a separate rain jacket is ideal then. The Leatt ADV FlowTour 5.5 is AA-certified and comes with a HydraDri rain jacket.

A helmet for long days

An adventure helmet with a large visor gives plenty of visibility in the bends and is comfortable on long rides.

Boots and gloves

Comfortable boots for the stops and airy gloves for warm days.

Rain gear

A shower in the mountains comes quickly. With a rain suit under the seat, you simply ride on.

Luggage for a multi-day trip

For a trip of a few days, panniers or a top case are enough.

Intercom and lock

If you ride together, an intercom makes things a lot easier. And for the stops along the way, a disc lock comes in handy.
