An open-face helmet leaves your face free. More visibility, more air, quicker on and off, and a look that suits a classic motorcycle, a scrambler, or daily city traffic.

What you sacrifice, frankly

An open-face helmet does not have a chin bar. In a frontal fall, your chin and jaw will come into direct contact with the road surface, which is one of the most frequently injured areas in helmet damage. That doesn't make it the wrong choice, but a conscious one. For city traffic at lower speeds, visibility and comfort outweigh other factors for many riders. For highway and longer rides, a full-face or modular helmet is safer.

If the helmet doesn't have a visor, you'll need goggles to protect against wind, insects, and road debris. Without eye protection, your eyes will tear up within a few kilometers, and your vision will be worse than with protection. Many models have an internal sun visor that you can lower with a slider. In summer, this is more pleasant than wearing sunglasses under your helmet.

ECE 22.06 is the current standard and is stricter than the old 22.05, particularly regarding rotational forces.Wind noise. With an open-face helmet, you'll hear more wind than with a full-face helmet. Hearing protection is needed sooner, not later.Measure your head circumference one centimeter above your eyebrows.
