When and how to replace your clutch

Question

Accepted Answer

A slipping clutch shows itself when the revs rise without the bike going any faster, especially when accelerating in a high gear. A clutch that engages heavily or unevenly can also point to wear. Measure the friction plates with a caliper and compare the thickness with the figure in your service manual. Check the steel plates for warping and discolouration, and replace the springs if they're below the minimum length. Soak new friction plates in the right oil before fitting, and afterwards use an oil suitable for wet clutches.
