Motocross apparel works differently from road apparel: no built-in protectors, as you wear those underneath as a body protector and knee brace. What does matter is stretch where you move, abrasion-resistant material on the seat and knees, and ventilation for work where you stand and sweat.

Choosing the right size with your protection on

This is the most common mistake made and one that renders your clothing unusable. A motocross jersey goes over your body protector, so you need noticeably more room in the chest and shoulders than with a regular shirt. Motocross pants go over your knee brace or knee pads, so you need more room in the leg. If you wear a C-Frame or X-Frame brace, count on at least one extra size in the thigh and knee. Always try them on with the protection you wear on the track, never without.
