Motorcycle Base Layers

The layer against your skin determines how your motorcycle gear feels. A cotton T-shirt absorbs sweat and sticks to you cold and wet as soon as you stop, no matter how good your jacket is. A good base layer wicks away moisture and is snug enough not to wrinkle under your protectors.

This is a separate category that many people are unaware of: clothing you wear under regular clothes that is itself certified motorcycle gear. From Bowtex, there are shirts and leggings, with the Optimal line in class AA and the Elite V2 in class AAA, for men and women. From Knox, there is the Tor protective jacket for women in class AA. This is the solution for those who ride to work in jeans and a regular jacket: the protection is underneath and no one sees it.

From Lindstrands you'll find the Longs, Dry Tee, Dry Sweater, Dry Wind, and Dry Shorts, plus the Marieberg and Alva leggings. From Alpinestars there is the Ride Tech v2. These wick away moisture and retain warmth without making you feel bulky.

The Difference in One Sentence

Bowtex and Knox protect you from abrasion in a fall, but don't keep you warm. Lindstrands and Alpinestars keep you warm and dry, but don't protect you. If you want both, wear them over each other.

Base layers should fit snugly like a second skin. Space means the fabric no longer wicks moisture away from your skin and will shift under your jacket. Unsure? Use our size advisor. Everything at WheelsWork comes through official European distributors.
