Soft Bags versus Hard Cases

Soft bags weigh less, do not require a rack, and will not damage your motorcycle in a fall. They are also harder to lock, so do not leave valuables in them at an unattended parking spot. Hard cases are lockable and waterproof, but require a carrier system and make your motorcycle wider.

Waterproof or Water-Repellent

This is the detail that most often causes disappointment. Water-repellent bags keep out a shower, but not hours of continuous rain on the highway. Check if there is a separate rain cover included or a roll closure instead of a zipper.
