The brand was founded by Henri Gorthuis, who worked as a mechanic in Grand Prix racing in the 1980s, and is now in its third generation of ownership. The exhausts are made in the Netherlands and are used by racing teams worldwide.

For a two-stroke engine, the header determines the character of the engine. HGS tunes the shape and volume to the engine block, focusing on tractable power rather than a sudden power surge.
