What this oil does
Engine oil in a motorcycle does more work than in a car. In most engines, the same oil lubricates the engine block, gearbox, and wet clutch. This means the oil must simultaneously lubricate, cool, carry away dirt, and maintain enough grip so your clutch doesn't slip.
If you ride with oil that is too old or too little, you will first notice it by a heavier-shifting gearbox and an engine that runs hotter than normal.
What to consider when choosing
- The prescribed viscosity is in your owner's manual and varies by model and year of manufacture. Always use that as a guide, not what fits another motorcycle.
- If your motorcycle has a wet clutch, the oil must be suitable for it. Car oil with friction-reducing additives can cause the clutch to slip.
- Check how much oil your engine needs, including a filter change. This often saves half a liter compared to the amount stated without a filter.
Changing the oil
Preferably change the oil when the engine is at operating temperature; then the oil will drain faster and carry more dirt with it. Replace the sealing ring of the drain plug and tighten it to the prescribed torque. Then fill up to the middle of the sight glass or between the marks on the dipstick, let the engine run briefly, and check again.
