What this oil does

Engine oil does more work in a motorcycle than in a car. In most engines, the same oil lubricates the engine, gearbox, and wet clutch. This means the oil must simultaneously lubricate, cool, carry away dirt, and maintain enough grip so that your clutch does not slip.

If you drive with oil that is too old or too little, you will first notice a heavier shifting gearbox and an engine that gets hotter than usual.

What to look for when choosing

• The prescribed viscosity is in your instruction manual and varies per model and year of manufacture. Always follow that, not what fits another engine.
• If your engine has a wet clutch, the oil must be suitable for it. Car oil with friction-reducing additives can cause the clutch to slip.
• Check how much oil your engine needs, including filter change. This often saves half a liter compared to the amount specified without a filter.

Changing

Preferably change the oil when the engine is at operating temperature, as the oil will drain faster and carry more dirt with it. Replace the drain plug sealing ring and tighten it to the prescribed torque. Then fill it up to the middle of the sight glass or between the marks on the dipstick, let the engine run briefly, and check again.
