What this oil provides
Engine oil in a motorcycle does more work than in a car. In most engines, the same oil lubricates the engine, gearbox, and wet clutch. This means that the oil must simultaneously lubricate, cool, carry away dirt, and maintain enough grip so that your clutch does not slip.
If you ride with oil that is too old or too little, you will first notice it by a gearbox that shifts harder and an engine that gets hotter than normal.
What to look for when choosing
- The prescribed viscosity is stated in your instruction manual and varies by model and year of manufacture. Always use this as a guide, not what fits another engine.
- If your engine has a wet clutch, the oil must be suitable for it. Car oil with friction-reducing additives can cause the clutch to slip.
- Check how much oil your engine needs, including a filter change. This often means half a liter more than the stated amount without a filter.
Changing
Preferably change the oil when the engine is at operating temperature, as the oil will drain more easily and carry away more dirt. Replace the sealing ring of the drain plug and tighten it to the prescribed torque. Then fill it to the middle of the sight glass or between the marks on the dipstick, let the engine run briefly, and check again.
