Putoline Formula GP controls the damping of your front fork. Volume 1 liter.
5W puts you in the lighter end of the range. The fork moves faster and feels more comfortable.
From Putoline's racing line.
What fork oil does
Your front fork springs on the coils, but the damping comes from the oil being forced through small passages. The viscosity of that oil determines how quickly the fork compresses and extends. Fresh oil provides noticeably calmer handling than oil that has been in there for years.
Thicker or thinner
- A lighter oil allows the fork to move faster and feels more comfortable.
- A heavier oil slows down the movement and provides more support during hard braking or with a heavily loaded motorcycle.
- Fill both fork legs with exactly the same oil and the same amount. You will immediately feel a difference between left and right in the steering behavior.
Filling and measuring
The oil level in a fork is measured from the top of the fork tube, with the spring removed and the fork fully compressed. This measurement is in your workshop manual and is more accurate than measuring by volume. A few millimeters difference in level noticeably changes the damping at the end of the stroke.
