Putoline HPX R determines how your fork reacts to bumps. Contents 1 litre.
With 20W you are at the heavy end of the range. The damping becomes stiffer and provides more support.
What fork oil does
Your front fork is suspended by springs, but the damping comes from the oil that is forced through small orifices. The thickness of that oil determines how quickly the fork compresses and extends. Fresh oil provides noticeably calmer handling than oil that has been in for years.
Thicker or thinner
- A lighter oil allows the fork to move faster and feels more comfortable.
- A heavier oil slows down the movement and provides more support during hard braking or with a heavily loaded motorcycle.
- Fill both fork legs with exactly the same oil and the same amount. You will immediately feel the difference between left and right in the steering behaviour.
Filling and checking the level
The oil level in a fork is measured from the top of the fork tube, with the spring removed and the fork fully compressed. This measurement is in your workshop manual and is more accurate than measuring by volume. A few millimetres difference in level noticeably changes the damping at the end of the stroke.
