What coolant does

Coolant dissipates heat, lowers the freezing point, and raises the boiling point. It also protects aluminum parts and the water pump from corrosion. The latter is why you shouldn't use tap water, not even in summer.

What to watch out for

• Do not mix different types of coolant. If in doubt, flush the system and refill completely.
• If you need to dilute, use demineralized water. Tap water leaves behind limescale.
• Bleed the system after filling. Air in the cooling jacket causes localized overheating while the gauge shows nothing unusual.
