What this oil provides

Engine oil does more work in a motorcycle than in a car. In most motorcycles, the same oil lubricates the engine, gearbox, and wet clutch. This means the oil must simultaneously lubricate, cool, carry away dirt, and maintain enough grip so your clutch does not slip.

If you drive with oil that is too old or too low, you will first notice it by a heavier shifting gearbox and an engine that gets hotter than normal.

What to consider when choosing

• The prescribed viscosity is stated in your owner's manual and varies per model and year of manufacture. Always use this as a guide, not what fits another motorcycle.
• If your motorcycle has a wet clutch, the oil must be suitable for it. Car oil with friction-reducing additives can cause the clutch to slip.
• Check how much oil your engine needs, including filter change. This often saves half a litre compared to the specification without a filter.

Changing the oil

Preferably change the oil when the engine is at operating temperature, as it will drain more easily and carry away more dirt. Replace the drain plug sealing ring and tighten it to the prescribed torque. Then fill it up to the middle of the sight glass or between the marks on the dipstick, let the engine run briefly, and check again.
