What this oil provides

Engine oil in a motorcycle does more work than in a car. In most motorcycles, the same oil lubricates the engine, gearbox, and wet clutch. This means the oil must simultaneously lubricate, cool, carry away dirt, and maintain enough grip so that your clutch doesn't slip.

If you ride with oil that is too old or too little, you will first notice it by a harder-shifting gearbox and an engine that gets hotter than usual.

What to look for when choosing

• The prescribed viscosity is in your owner's manual and varies by model and year of manufacture. Always go by that, not by what fits another motorcycle.
• If your motorcycle has a wet clutch, the oil must be suitable for it. Car oil with friction-reducing additives can cause the clutch to slip.
• Check how much oil your motorcycle needs, including filter change. This often saves half a litre compared to the amount without a filter.

Changing the oil

Preferably change the oil when the engine is at operating temperature; then the oil drains out more easily and carries away more dirt. Replace the sealing ring of the drain plug and tighten it at the prescribed torque. Then fill up to the middle of the sight glass or between the marks on the dipstick, let the engine run briefly, and check again.
