Mixing or dosing

A two-stroke engine gets its lubrication via the fuel. With older engines and most dirt bikes, you mix the oil into the petrol yourself. Engines with an oil pump dose automatically and have a separate oil tank.

The correct mixing ratio varies per engine and sometimes per use. This can be found in your instruction manual. Never mix by feel: too little oil will ruin your engine, too much causes soot and a fouled exhaust.

What to look out for

• Mix in a clean jerrycan, not in the tank, and shake well.
• Do not mix more than you will use within a few weeks. Petrol with oil in it ages.
• If you drive with E10, keep in mind that this fuel ages faster.
