Mixing or Dosing

A two-stroke engine receives its lubrication via the fuel. With older engines and most dirt bikes, you mix the oil with the gasoline yourself. Engines with an oil pump dose automatically and have a separate oil tank.

The correct mixing ratio varies per engine and sometimes per use. This is stated in your instruction manual. Never mix by feel: too little oil will cost you an engine, too much will cause soot and a fouled exhaust.

What to look out for

• Mix in a clean jerrycan, not in the tank, and shake well.
• Do not mix more than you will use within a few weeks. Gasoline with oil in it degrades.
• If you ride with E10, keep in mind that this fuel degrades faster.
