Mixing or Dosing

A two-stroke engine receives its lubrication through the fuel. For older engines and most dirt bikes, you mix the oil into the petrol yourself. Engines with an oil pump dose automatically and have a separate oil tank.

The correct mixing ratio varies per engine and sometimes per use. This can be found in your instruction manual. Never mix by feel: too little oil will damage your engine, too much will cause soot and a fouled exhaust.

Things to Consider

• Mix in a clean jerry can, not in the tank, and shake thoroughly.
• Do not mix more than you will use within a few weeks. Petrol with oil in it degrades over time.
• If you use E10, be aware that this fuel degrades more quickly.
