This Putoline gear oil keeps the transmission lubricated, even under high loads. Capacity 15 litres.
Viscosity 75W. The viscosity your engine requires is stated in the instruction manual and varies per model and year of manufacture.
When you need separate gearbox oil
Engines with separate lubrication have their own filling for the gearbox. This is the case with many two-stroke engines, and with some scooters and quads. In most four-stroke engines, the gearbox shares the engine oil, so you don't need this.
If you are in doubt, check if your engine has a separate drain plug and filler opening for the gearbox. If it doesn't, it shares the oil with the engine block.
What to pay attention to
- Gear oil comes in different viscosities. Heavier isn't automatically better: too thick makes shifting stiffer, especially when it's cold.
- If the clutch runs in the same oil, use an oil suitable for that purpose.
- The capacity of a gearbox is small, often less than a litre. Measure instead of filling by eye.
Changing
Gear oil gets dirty due to wear of the gears, not due to combustion. Change according to the interval in your instruction manual, and more often for motocross and enduro. A grey or milky colour indicates water in the gearbox, and then something else is going on than just old oil.
