When you need separate gearbox oil

Engines with separate lubrication have their own filling for the gearbox. This is the case with many two-strokes, and with some scooters and quads. Most four-stroke engines share the engine oil with the gearbox, so you don't need this.

If you're unsure, check if your engine has a separate drain plug and filler opening for the gearbox. If not, it shares the oil with the engine block.

What to look out for

• Gearbox oil comes in different viscosities. Heavier is not automatically better: too thick makes shifting stiffer, especially when it's cold.
• If the clutch runs in the same oil, use an oil suitable for that purpose.
• The capacity of a gearbox is small, often less than a litre. Measure precisely instead of filling by eye.

Changing the oil

Gearbox oil gets dirty due to gear wear, not combustion. Change it according to the interval in your owner's manual, and more frequently for motocross and enduro. A grey or milky colour indicates water in the gearbox, which means something else is going on than just old oil.
