When you need separate gearbox oil
Engines with separate lubrication have their own filling for the gearbox. This is often the case with two-stroke engines, and with some scooters and ATVs. In most four-stroke engines, the gearbox shares the engine oil, so you don't need this.
If you are in doubt, check if your motorcycle has a separate drain plug and filler opening for the gearbox. If not, it shares the oil with the engine.
What to look for
- Gearbox oil comes in different viscosities. Heavier is not automatically better: too thick makes shifting stiffer, especially when it's cold.
- If the clutch runs in the same oil, use an oil that is suitable for this.
- The capacity of a gearbox is small, often less than a litre. Measure precisely instead of filling by eye.
Changing the oil
Gearbox oil gets dirty due to wear of the gears, not due to combustion. Change according to the interval in your owner's manual, and more frequently for motocross and enduro. A grey or milky colour indicates water in the gearbox, and then there is something else going on than just old oil.
