When you need separate transmission oil

Engines with separate lubrication have their own filling for the transmission. This is common in many two-stroke engines, and in some scooters and quads. In most four-stroke engines, the transmission shares the engine oil, and in that case, you don't need this.

If you are unsure, check if your motorcycle has a separate drain plug and filler opening for the transmission. If it doesn't, it shares oil with the engine block.

What to look out for

• Transmission oil comes in different viscosities. Heavier is not automatically better: too thick makes shifting stiffer, especially when it's cold.
• If the clutch runs in the same oil, use an oil suitable for that purpose.
• The capacity of a transmission is small, often less than a litre. Measure accurately instead of filling by eye.

Changing the oil

Transmission oil gets dirty due to gear wear, not combustion. Change it according to the interval in your owner's manual, and more frequently for cross and enduro. A grey or milky colour indicates water in the transmission, and in that case, there's something else going on besides just old oil.
