When you need separate transmission oil

Engines with separate lubrication have their own filling for the gearbox. This is the case for many two-strokes, and for some scooters and quads. In most four-stroke engines, the gearbox shares the engine oil, so you don't need this.

If you're unsure, check if your engine has a separate drain plug and filler opening for the gearbox. If not, it shares its oil with the engine block.

What to look out for

• Transmission oil comes in various viscosities. Heavier isn't automatically better: too thick makes shifting stiffer, especially when it's cold.
• If the clutch runs in the same oil, use an oil suitable for that purpose.
• The capacity of a gearbox is small, often less than a liter. Measure rather than filling by eye.

Changing

Transmission oil gets dirty from gear wear, not from combustion. Change according to the interval in your owner's manual, and more often for motocross and enduro. A grey or milky colour indicates water in the gearbox, in which case there's something else going on besides just old oil.
