Short answer: in Europe, motorcycle clothing is tested to the EN 17092 standard. Class AAA offers the highest protection against abrasion and impact, AA is below that, and A is the minimum with both abrasion protection and armour. Class B only protects against abrasion, without armour. With motorcycle jeans you mostly see A and AA, but AAA jeans exist too. The higher the class, the more protection.
Motorcycle jeans are popular: you look like you are simply wearing regular jeans, but you are better protected. Still, not every pair is the same. In this guide we explain what the letters on the label mean, what to look for when buying and which motorcycle jeans suit you.
The classes of EN 17092
| Class | Protection | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| AAA | Abrasion and impact | The highest level within the standard |
| AA | Abrasion and impact | Suitable for most types of riding |
| A | Abrasion and impact | The minimum level with abrasion and impact protection |
| B | Abrasion only | No armour; wear separate armour with it |
| C | Armour only | Clothing that only holds armour in place |
For classes AAA, AA and A, the most important zones are tested, such as the seat, hips and knees on a pair of pants. A higher class means the fabric resists abrasion for longer and the garment as a whole offers more protection.
How do motorcycle jeans work?
Regular jeans wear through very quickly in a fall on asphalt. Motorcycle jeans are therefore reinforced. This is done in two ways:
- With a lining: on the inside, an extra layer of strong fibres sits at the vulnerable spots, such as aramid (for example Twaron or Kevlar).
- Without a lining: the strong fibres are woven into the fabric itself. Such pants are often lighter and wear more like regular jeans.
In addition, motorcycle jeans have pockets for knee armour and often for hip armour too. Check whether the knee armour is height adjustable, so that it sits exactly on your knee in your riding position.
Motorcycle jeans for men
Maximum protection: AAA
If you want the highest level within the standard, choose a class AAA pair of jeans, such as the PMJ Rosco.
The all-rounders: AA
For most riders, class AA is the best balance between protection, comfort and looks. Knox and PMJ have strong models here, in different fits and lengths.
Slim and light: A
If you are looking for slim, light jeans for the city or short rides, class A is a good choice.
Not into the jeans look? A motorcycle jogger
Prefer something sportier? A motorcycle jogger wears like regular joggers, but with protection.
Motorcycle jeans for women
Women's models have a different cut, with more room at the hips and a higher waist. Here too you will find jeans in AAA and AA.

What to look for when buying
- The class on the label: AAA, AA or A. Pants without an EN 17092 label are not certified motorcycle pants.
- Armour: is it included, and can you adjust the knee armour in height?
- Fit: slim, regular or straight. Many brands also offer different leg lengths.
- Riding position: sit down and bend your knees. The pants must not become too short above your boot and the knee armour must stay on your knee.
- Weather: motorcycle jeans are not waterproof. If in doubt, bring rain pants.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, AA or AAA?
AAA is the highest level within the standard. For most riders, AA offers a good balance between protection and comfort.
Is the armour already included?
Classes A, AA and AAA include impact protection. Check the product page to see exactly which armour is included.
Can I just wash my motorcycle jeans?
Yes, usually. Take out the armour first and follow the care label.
