Short answer: to get started in motocross you need a motocross bike, a track where you are allowed to ride, and a complete set of gear: motocross helmet, goggles, motocross boots, gloves, jersey and pants, and chest and back protection. A neck brace and knee braces are strongly recommended. Never skimp on your helmet and boots.
Motocross is one of the most fun, but also one of the most demanding forms of riding. You are constantly on the move, you fall more often than on the road and your bike takes a lot of punishment. Good gear makes the difference between a great first day and a miserable one. In this guide you will read what you need, from head to toe.
Where can you ride motocross?
A motocross bike without a registration plate is not allowed on public roads. You ride on a motocross track or another area meant for it. Most tracks require a licence or a training or day pass, and often valid insurance. The rules differ per track and per organisation, so ask the track or club beforehand what you need. Many clubs also organise training for beginners, a great way to start safely.

| Knee protection or knee braces | Protection for your knees | Strongly recommended |
| Neck brace | Limits extreme movements of your head and neck | Strongly recommended |
Motocross helmet
Your helmet is the most important item. Choose an ECE 22.06 approved motocross helmet that fits snugly and comfortably. For beginners, the Airoh Wraaap and the LS2 MX708 Fast II are strong, affordable choices.
Goggles
A motocross helmet has no visor, so you wear goggles. They protect your eyes from sand, stones and mud thrown up by the riders ahead of you. Choose goggles that fit well in the opening of your helmet.
Jersey and pants: start with a Ride Kit
A motocross jersey and pants are made to move freely and to take a knock. A handy way to start is a Ride Kit: jersey, pants and gloves in one matching set.
Gloves
Motocross gloves are thin so you can feel the levers, and they give grip when your hands sweat. Feel free to bring two pairs, especially when it is wet or muddy.
Motocross boots
Regular motorcycle boots are not made for motocross. Motocross boots are tall and stiff and protect your foot, ankle and shin from impacts, twists and the footpegs. The Sidi Crosscore is a good entry point, the Crossfire 3 is a step up.
Protection for chest, back, knees and neck
A chest protector or body protector shields you from flying stones and in a fall. Knee braces support your knees, and a neck brace limits extreme movements of your head relative to your torso. You do not need everything on day one, but start with chest and back protection.
For youth riders
Is your child starting motocross? The same rules apply: helmet, goggles, boots, gloves and protection. Choose gear in a true youth size, not a size they still have to grow into. Protection that is too big does not stay in place.
Tips for your first day on the track
- Start easy. Ride a few laps first to learn the track before you pick up the pace.
- Stand on the footpegs. Standing gives you more control over bumps and jumps.
- Look where you want to go. Your bike goes where you look, not to the obstacle you are staring at.
- Take enough breaks and drink plenty. Motocross is harder than you think, and fatigue is one of the biggest causes of mistakes.
- Check your bike. Before every session, look at your tyre pressure, chain and brakes.
Frequently asked questions
What does it cost to get started in motocross?
That depends mostly on your bike. For gear, you can already start well with an entry-level set. Do not save on your helmet and boots, they matter most.
Do I need a licence to ride motocross?
On a closed motocross track no motorcycle driving licence is needed, but often a licence or a training or day pass is. Ask the track what they require.
What size motocross boots do I need?
Measure your foot length and compare it with the size chart. Motocross boots are stiff, so they need to fit well from the start. Also read our tips in the right size in motorcycle clothing.
Is a neck brace mandatory?
Usually not, but many riders wear one as extra protection. When trying one on, check that it works well with your helmet and body protector.
Can I ride motocross with a regular motorcycle helmet?
We advise against it. A motocross helmet is made for the ventilation and vision you need in motocross, and for wearing goggles.
