Mixing or Dosing

A two-stroke engine receives its lubrication via the fuel. For older engines and most dirt bikes, you mix the oil with the petrol yourself. Engines with an oil pump dose automatically and have a separate oil tank.

The correct mixing ratio varies per engine and sometimes per use. This is stated in your owner's manual. Never mix by feel: too little oil will destroy your engine, too much will cause soot and a clogged exhaust.

What to look for

• Mix in a clean jerrycan, not in the tank, and shake well.
• Do not mix more than you will use within a few weeks. Fuel with oil in it deteriorates.
• If you drive with E10, keep in mind that this fuel deteriorates faster.
