Mixing or dosing

A two-stroke engine gets its lubrication via the fuel. With older engines and most dirt bikes, you mix the oil into the petrol yourself. Engines with an oil pump dose automatically and have a separate oil tank.

The correct mixing ratio differs per engine and sometimes per use. This can be found in your owner's manual. Never mix by feel: too little oil will destroy your engine, too much will cause soot and a dirty exhaust.

What to look out for

• Mix in a clean jerry can, not in the tank, and shake well.
• Do not mix more than you will use within a few weeks. Petrol with oil in it degrades over time.
• If you ride with E10, keep in mind that this fuel degrades faster.
