When you need separate gear oil

Engines with separate lubrication have their own filling for the gearbox. This is often the case with two-stroke engines, and with some scooters and quads. In most four-stroke engines, the gearbox shares the engine oil, so you don't need this.

If you're unsure, check if your engine has a separate drain plug and filler opening for the gearbox. If it doesn't, it shares the oil with the engine block.

What to pay attention to

• Gear oil comes in different viscosities. Heavier isn't automatically better: too thick makes shifting stiffer, especially when it's cold.
• If the clutch runs in the same oil, use an oil suitable for that purpose.
• The capacity of a gearbox is small, often less than a litre. Measure precisely instead of filling by eye.

Changing

Gear oil gets dirty from wear and tear on the gears, not from combustion. Change according to the interval in your instruction manual, and more frequently for cross and enduro. A grey or milky colour indicates water in the gearbox, and then there's something else going on than just old oil.
