When you need separate gearbox oil
Engines with separate lubrication have their own filling for the gearbox. This is the case with many two-strokes, and with some scooters and quads. In most four-stroke engines, the gearbox shares the engine oil, so you don't need this.
If you're unsure, check if your engine has a separate drain plug and filler opening for the gearbox. If not, it shares the oil with the engine block.
What to look for
- Gearbox oil comes in different viscosities. Heavier is not automatically better: too thick makes shifting stiffer, especially when it's cold.
- If the clutch runs in the same oil, use an oil suitable for that purpose.
- The capacity of a gearbox is small, often less than a liter. Measure rather than filling by eye.
Changing
Gearbox oil gets dirty due to gear wear, not combustion. Change according to the interval in your owner's manual, and more often for motocross and enduro. A grey or milky colour indicates water in the gearbox, and then something else is going on than just old oil.
