When you need separate transmission oil

Engines with separate lubrication have their own fill for the gearbox. This is often the case with two-stroke engines, and some scooters and quads. In most four-stroke engines, the gearbox shares the engine oil, so you won't need this.

If you are unsure, check if your motorcycle has a separate drain plug and fill opening for the gearbox. If not, it shares oil with the engine.

What to consider

• Transmission oil comes in different viscosities. Heavier is not automatically better: too thick can make shifting stiffer, especially when it's cold.
• If the clutch runs in the same oil, use an oil suitable for that purpose.
• The capacity of a gearbox is small, often less than one litre. Measure rather than filling by eye.

Changing oil

Transmission oil gets dirty from gear wear, not combustion. Change according to the interval in your owner's manual, and more frequently for motocross and enduro. A grey or milky colour indicates water in the gearbox, and then there is something else going on than just old oil.
