Short answer: the best motorcycle routes in the Sauerland run along the reservoirs (Biggesee, Hennesee, Sorpesee and Möhnesee), over the ridges of the Rothaargebirge and up to the Kahler Asten near Winterberg. Willingen, Winterberg and Schmallenberg are good bases for a motorcycle weekend. The best season runs from May to September.
The Sauerland is in North Rhine-Westphalia and is quicker to reach for many Dutch riders than you might think. The area is known for its reservoirs, dense forests and hills of well over 800 metres. That means long, flowing bends, alternating with short climbs and descents. Ideal for a weekend away on the bike.
1. The Biggesee and Attendorn
The Biggesee is one of the best-known reservoirs in the Sauerland. The roads around the lake offer new views over the water at every turn. In Attendorn you can visit the Atta Cave, a stalactite cave that makes a nice break on your ride.
2. The Hennesee and Meschede
Close to Meschede lies the Hennesee, surrounded by forest. A lap around the lake is short, but you can easily extend it with the hilly roads towards Eslohe and Schmallenberg.
3. The Sorpesee and Sundern
A relaxed route around Sundern and the Sorpesee, with Langscheid on the water as the highlight. Here you will find terraces and restaurants with a view of the lake. A great route to open the season or to get some practice in if you are not that experienced yet.
4. The Möhnesee
On the northern edge of the Sauerland lies the Möhnesee, a large reservoir with an impressive dam. The roads along the south shore and through the Arnsberg Forest are varied and wooded.
5. Winterberg and the Kahler Asten
At roughly 842 metres, the Kahler Asten is one of the highest points in North Rhine-Westphalia. The roads around Winterberg constantly climb and drop, and on a clear day they offer sweeping views. A route from Brilon via Winterberg to Medebach is one of the more challenging ones in the Sauerland.
6. The Rothaargebirge: Bad Berleburg and Schmallenberg
The Rothaargebirge is a long ridge with roads that run over the tops and through the valleys. A loop from Bad Berleburg via Schmallenberg and Lennestadt is a full day ride with plenty of elevation change and beautiful panoramas.
7. Willingen and the Diemelsee
Willingen lies just across the border in Hesse and is a well-known meeting place for motorcyclists. Combine it with the Diemelsee and the roads through the Upland for a varied ride with lakes, forests and short climbs.
8. The Lenne Valley
The Lenne winds through the western Sauerland. The roads along the river between Lennestadt and Finnentrop are relaxed, with bends that let you settle into a nice rhythm.
9. Arnsberg and the Arnsberg Forest
Arnsberg has a historic centre on a hill above the Ruhr. To the north lies the Arnsberg Forest, a large wooded area with long, twisty roads. A good combination with the Möhnesee.
10. Brilon and Medebach
In the east of the Hochsauerland lie Brilon and Medebach. It is quieter here than around Winterberg and Willingen, with open landscapes and small villages. A lovely finale for a multi-day tour.
What to know before you go
- It is colder: in the Hochsauerland it is often several degrees colder than in the lowlands. Bring an extra layer, even in summer.
- Checks: on popular motorcycle routes, checks are regularly carried out at weekends and on public holidays. During the week it is quieter.
- Road surface: on smaller roads you may come across tar snakes, repairs and loose ground, especially after rain and in shady forest sections.
- Wildlife: game regularly crosses the road in the forests, especially in the morning and evening.
- Crowds: around Winterberg, Willingen and the lakes it is busy in summer. For a quiet ride, choose a weekday.
