What this oil provides
Engine oil does more work in a motorcycle than in a car. In most motorcycles, the same oil lubricates the engine block, the gearbox, and the wet clutch. This means that the oil must simultaneously lubricate, cool, carry away dirt, and maintain enough grip so that your clutch does not slip.
If you ride with oil that is too old or too little, you will first notice it by a heavier shifting gearbox and an engine block that gets hotter than normal.
What to look for when choosing
- The prescribed viscosity is stated in your instruction manual and varies per model and year of manufacture. Always use that as a guide, not what fits another motorcycle.
- If your motorcycle has a wet clutch, the oil must be suitable for it. Car oil with friction-reducing additives can cause the clutch to slip.
- Check how much oil your engine needs including a filter change. This often saves half a liter compared to the specification without a filter.
Changing the oil
Preferably change the oil when the engine is at operating temperature, then the oil flows out more easily and carries more dirt with it. Replace the sealing ring of the drain plug and tighten it at the prescribed torque. Then fill up to the middle of the sight glass or between the marks on the dipstick, let the engine run briefly, and check again.
