What this oil does
Engine oil in a motorcycle does more work than in a car. In most engines, the same oil lubricates the engine block, the gearbox, and the wet clutch. This means that the oil must simultaneously lubricate, cool, carry away dirt, and maintain enough grip so that your clutch does not slip.
If you drive with oil that is too old or too little, you will first notice it by a gearbox that shifts heavier and an engine that gets warmer than normal.
What to consider when choosing
- The prescribed viscosity is stated in your instruction manual and varies per model and year of manufacture. Always go by that, not by what fits another engine.
- If your engine has a wet clutch, the oil must be suitable for it. Car oil with friction-reducing additives can cause the clutch to slip.
- Check how much oil your engine needs, including filter change. This often saves half a litre compared to the specification without a filter.
Changing oil
Preferably change the oil when the engine is at operating temperature, then the oil will drain more smoothly and carry away more dirt. Replace the sealing ring of the drain plug and tighten it to the prescribed torque. Then refill to the middle of the sight glass or between the marks on the dipstick, let the engine run briefly, and check again.
