What this oil does

Engine oil does more work in a motorcycle than in a car. In most motorcycles, the same oil lubricates the engine block, the gearbox, and the wet clutch. This means the oil must simultaneously lubricate, cool, carry away dirt, and maintain enough grip so that your clutch does not slip.

If you ride with oil that is too old or too little, you will first notice it by a harder-shifting gearbox and an engine that becomes warmer than usual.

What to look for when choosing

• The prescribed viscosity is in your owner's manual and varies by model and year of manufacture. Always use that as a guide, not what fits another motorcycle.
• If your motorcycle has a wet clutch, the oil must be suitable for it. Car oil with friction-reducing additives can cause the clutch to slip.
• Check how much oil your engine needs, including a filter change. This often saves half a litre compared to the amount without a filter.

Changing

Preferably change the oil when the engine is at operating temperature, as the oil will flow out more easily and carry more dirt with it. Replace the drain plug's sealing ring and tighten it to the prescribed torque. Then fill up to the middle of the sight glass or between the marks on the dipstick, let the engine run briefly, and check again.
