What this oil does
Motor oil does more work in a motorcycle than in a car. In most motorcycles, the same oil lubricates the engine, gearbox, and wet clutch. This means the oil must simultaneously lubricate, cool, carry away dirt, and maintain enough grip so your clutch doesn't slip.
If you ride with oil that is too old or too low, you will first notice a harder shifting gearbox and an engine that runs hotter than normal.
What to consider when choosing
- The prescribed viscosity is in your owner's manual and varies by model and year of manufacture. Always base your choice on this, not on what fits another motorcycle.
- If your motorcycle has a wet clutch, the oil must be suitable for it. Car oil with friction-reducing additives can cause the clutch to slip.
- Check how much oil your motorcycle needs, including a filter change. This often means half a liter more than the amount specified without a filter.
Changing the oil
Preferably change the oil when the engine is at operating temperature, as the oil will drain more easily and carry away more dirt. Replace the drain plug sealing ring and tighten it to the prescribed torque. Then fill it to the middle of the sight glass or between the marks on the dipstick, let the engine run briefly, and check again.
