What this oil does
Engine oil in a motorcycle does more work than in a car. In most motorcycles, the same oil lubricates the engine block, the gearbox, and the wet clutch. This means the oil must simultaneously lubricate, cool, carry away dirt, and maintain enough grip so that your clutch does not slip.
If you ride with oil that is too old or too little, you will first notice it by a heavier shifting gearbox and an engine that gets hotter than normal.
What to consider when choosing
- The prescribed viscosity is stated in your instruction manual and varies by model and year of manufacture. Always follow that, not what fits another motorcycle.
- If your motorcycle has a wet clutch, the oil must be suitable for it. Car oil with friction-reducing additives can cause the clutch to slip.
- Check how much oil your engine needs, including a filter change. This often saves half a litre compared to the specification without a filter.
Changing the oil
Preferably change the oil when the engine is at operating temperature, then the oil flows out more smoothly and carries more dirt with it. Replace the sealing ring of the drain plug and tighten it to the prescribed torque. Then fill to the middle of the sight glass or between the marks on the dipstick, let the engine run briefly, and check again.
